How Much Psilocybin Should You Take? An Oregon Facilitator Explains

One of the most important questions people ask before a legal psilocybin session in Oregon is:
"How much should I take?"
What you need to understand before determining the details, is that the dose is ultimately your choice.

As a licensed psilocybin facilitator in Oregon, my role is not to prescribe or recommend a specific dose. Instead, I help clients understand their options, explore their intentions, and make informed decisions about the experience they want to have. Every person's comfort level, goals, medical needs and previous experience with psychedelics are different, which is why Oregon's legal psilocybin program is designed to support individualized dosing.
Understanding Psilocybin Dosing in Oregon
Under Oregon law, psilocybin services take place at a licensed service center under the supervision of a licensed facilitator. Before your administration session, we meet for preparation sessions where we discuss:
Your intentions for the experience
How to prepare for a journey
Previous experience with psychedelics
Desired depth of experience
Personal comfort level with altered states of consciousness
Prescribed medications that could affect the experience
Techniques to implement in the event of undesirable emotions surfacing
A plan for your journey
Questions, concerns, and expectations
While facilitators can provide education about the effects commonly associated with different dose ranges, YOU decide how much psilocybin to consume.
Common Psilocybin Dose Ranges
The amount of psilocybin consumed can significantly influence the intensity and type of experience.

Micro Dose (Less than 2.5 mg Psilocybin)
A microdose is generally considered sub-perceptual, meaning most individuals experience little to no noticeable psychedelic effects. This dose range may appeal to those who are interested in exploring the potential wellness benefits of psilocybin—such as enhanced neuroplasticity, cognitive support, or improved mood—without experiencing significant alterations in perception or consciousness.
Microdosing is often an attractive option for individuals seeking a flexible and accessible introduction to legal psilocybin services. Because a microdose does not typically produce noticeable psychedelic effects, it can fit more easily into a busy lifestyle. Microdose sessions require only 15 minutes at the service center, after the initial 30 minute microdose session.
Potential effects may include:
Subtle mood enhancement
Increased focus
Enhanced creativity
Sub-perceptual neurocognitive enhancement
Small Dose (2.5–15 mg Psilocybin)
A small dose often produces noticeable but manageable effects. Think of this range and "enhancing" your perception.

Common experiences include:
Increased sensory awareness
Mild euphoria
Emotional openness
Enhanced appreciation of music, nature, or art
Medium Dose (15–25 mg Psilocybin)

This range is where many clients begin seeking deeper therapeutic or self-exploratory experiences.
Possible effects include:
Altered perception
Enhanced introspection
Heightened emotions
Increased creativity
Occasional synesthesia (blending of sensory experiences)
High Dose (25 mg and Above)

Higher doses can produce profound psychedelic experiences, including:
Significant changes in perception
Visual phenomena
Deep emotional processing
Spiritual or mystical experiences
Temporary dissolution of the usual sense of self
Heroic Dose (50 mg)
A 50 mg dose is the maximum amount of psilocybin legally permitted under Oregon's psilocybin program. This dose is typically reserved for individuals with significant prior psychedelic experience and/or those with known factors that may substantially reduce psilocybin's effects, such as certain medications.
At this level, the experience can become profoundly immersive and may involve:

Intense alterations in perception and sensory processing
Powerful visual phenomena
Deep emotional and psychological exploration
Mystical, transpersonal, or spiritually significant experiences
A temporary loss of familiar reference points, including one's usual sense of identity, time, or reality
This dose should not be approached casually. The intensity can be overwhelming, even for experienced individuals, and may involve periods of confusion, fear, disorientation, or a complete surrender of control over the direction of the experience.
While many people report profound insight and personal transformation from high-dose experiences, these sessions require careful preparation, realistic expectations, and a willingness to navigate challenging psychological territory. A strong foundation of trust, support, and integration becomes especially important at this level.
The Flexibility of Initial and Booster Doses
One of the important realities to accept in this experience is that magic mushrooms are notoriously unpredictable. The dose ranges described above are more like vague guidelines than specific directions.
Because it is not possible to predict how the psilocybin will hit, we have the opportunity to administer a "booster dose" approximately 45 minutes after the initial dose.

This approach allows you to:
Ease into the experience gradually
Assess your comfort level
Reduce uncertainty around taking too much initially
Adjust the intensity based on how you're feeling
For example, a client may begin with a moderate dose and then decide that the experience feels appropriate without taking any additional psilocybin. Another client may feel comfortable and choose to deepen the experience with a booster dose.
The decision remains entirely yours.
There Is No "Best" Psilocybin Dose
A common misconception is that higher doses automatically produce better outcomes.
In reality, the most appropriate dose depends entirely on your goals.
Some clients benefit from subtle shifts in awareness and emotional insight at lower doses. Others seek profound experiences that may occur at higher dose levels.
The goal is not to take the largest dose possible. The goal is to choose the dose that feels aligned with your intentions, comfort level, and readiness.
Working With a Licensed Psilocybin Facilitator

As a licensed Oregon psilocybin facilitator, my role is to provide education, preparation, presence, support, and integration throughout the entire process. During our preparation sessions, we take time to explore your intentions for the experience, discuss the potential effects associated with different dose ranges, and address any questions, expectations, or concerns you may have. Together, we create a foundation of trust and understanding so that you can approach your session feeling informed, prepared, and supported.
We also discuss important safety considerations and develop a plan for navigating whatever may arise during your experience. Following your administration session, I provide integration support to help you process insights, make meaning of your experience, and identify practical ways to carry what you've learned into your daily life. Throughout every stage of the process, you remain empowered to make your own decisions, including determining the dose that feels most aligned with your goals and comfort level.
